Toronto is the third busiest Crime Stoppers tip line in the world next to London, England, and South Africa, which stands third.

Almost 10,000 tips pour in a year, Crime Stoppers officials announced Tuesday at police headquarters during the launch of Crime Stoppers Month.

Det. Darlene Ross, co-ordinator of the Toronto Crime Stoppers, said it was through Crime Stoppers tips that charges were laid in the case last year of a girl who was shown on video being beaten by three other girls.

The girl, captured on video, was beaten and kicked on Yonge St. The video went viral and police soon made arrests and pressed charges.

“The phones rang off the hook,” Ross said.

“Working with Crime Stoppers has renewed my faith in people,” Ross told the Star later in an interview. “Half the people who call in don’t even claim the money even though they are eligible for a reward. They contact us because they want to do the right thing.”

The Toronto Crime Stoppers program is entering its 28th year, and last year, almost 10,000 tips poured in from the 1-800-222-TIPS line and their secure online form.

Tips are also received on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Chief Bill Blair says that the Toronto program has been responsible for solving 15,738 cases since its inception in 1984. Acting deputy chief Jeff McGuire told the crowd Tuesday that Crime Stoppers tips have led to 34,000 charges since its inception.
