Drivers being ripped off by faulty pumps dispensing ‘phantom gas’ - 


The NDP says Canadians are being gouged by faulty gas pumps that overstate the amount of gas drivers are getting and overcharge them.
The party says Canadians may be paying up to $20 million a year for what it calls “phantom gas”.
MP’s Peter Julian and Brian Masse were in Burnaby, B.C. Tuesday to launch a petition demanding the federal government take action to ensure gas pumps are displaying accurate information.
Julian says the Conservatives announced a plan to inspect gas pumps three years ago but nothing has happened and consumers are being ripped off every day.
Masse wants oil and gas companies to pay for the establishment of an independent gas ombudsman’s office to monitor the issue.
He says if the companies won’t provide the money, Ottawa should decrease their subsidies and tax breaks.
