Julie Mannell's beloved cat Ludwig is missing at Pearson International Airport after his cage was knocked to the ground and opened while being loaded onto a conveyor belt.
To add insult to injury, WestJet baggage handlers mocked Ms. Mannell as she searched for him.
“I heard this meowing sound and I got all excited because I thought I’d found him," she told theToronto Star. "But it was just the WestJet baggage guys making sounds to mock me, making fun of me. Another guy said he could find Ludwig if he could just bring in a big dog. He thought that was quite funny.”
The insensitivity shown to this woman is unconscionable.
Ludwig is a living, breathing, sentient being who is, no doubt, absolutely terrified, not to mention hungry and dehydrated, somewhere in the bowels of Terminal 3.
To make matters worse, it was never Ms. Mannell's intention to place Ludwig in the baggage compartment in the first place. But WestJet officials in Montreal would not allow Ludwig to travel in the cabin with his owner because his carrier was not soft sided. Odd, considering that hard-sided carry-on luggage is permitted.
After paying an extra $50 for Ludwig's trip in the baggage compartment, Ms. Mannell believed her cat would be handled with care and arrive in Toronto safely.
And now she waits.
Toronto Animal Control has set humane traps at the airport, in hopes of luring Ludwig out, and WestJet has put up posters of the black-and-white feline. But poor Ludwig has been missing since Monday night and has yet to reappear.

  1. Hard sided luggage is allowed as carry-on because it can go into the overhead bins. Carry-on kennels have to be soft-sided because they have to be able to fit underneath the seat in front of any passenger. Also, WestJet charges $50 for a kennel for both carry-on kennels and checked kennels so this person would've paid $50 regardless.

  2. Also, I sincerely doubt that WestJet employees would mock anyone in that situation. I frequently call my cats by meowing because it makes them curious and will come see what the noise is. Perhaps this is what they were doing. Seems very one sided here.

  3. Seriously - they were anything but helpful. What a bunch of assholes, they lose her cat and then laugh and poke fun at her, JERKS!

  4. Baggage handlers in Toronto are definitely not Westjet employees.

  5. Then why does the Toronto Star say "To add insult to injury, WestJet baggage handlers mocked Ms. Manne"?

  6. Actually, ground crew for WestJet at the Toronto airport are contract employees that work for a company called Swissport. They are not actually employed by WestJet.

  8. They apparently do not have their story straight and if the star printed this they should have all the CORRECT information before printing that in the paper.

  9. Update - Ludwig the cat on the loose in Toronto's airport has been found safe after spending a couple of days wandering around a terminal.

For two days, a two-year-old cat belonging to a university student prowled Pearson International Airport after escaping from a carrier on Monday.

WestJet says the cat -- named Ludwig -- is now safe.

The cat escaped in the baggage area of the airport after its carrier was dropped while being loaded onto a conveyor belt at Terminal 3.

The cat's owner says the situation was made worse as baggage handlers mocked the woman, saying they could help find the cat by using a big dog.

WestJet says it is investigating the incident.
